FJ Cruiser Wing Delete Brackets: The UAE Desert Guide

· Rigid Custom Works

If you drive an FJ Cruiser in the UAE, you already know the front end is the first thing the country attacks. Sun on the bumper for eleven hours a day. Sand blasting the lower valance every weekend at Al Badayer. Salt-loaded humidity rolling in off the coast overnight. And sitting right in the middle of all that, doing almost nothing useful, are the factory fog light wings — two oversized plastic scoops that were styled in the mid-2000s and have not aged well anywhere, least of all here.

Most owners eventually pull them off. That is the easy part. The hard part is what you are left with: two raw, gaping holes in the bumper, exposed hardware, and a front end that now looks unfinished instead of upgraded. That gap is the reason we built the FJ Cruiser wing delete brackets — a purpose-designed 5-inch square bracket set that closes the hole, mounts a real light, and does it with a material that survives a Gulf summer instead of surrendering to it.

Rigid Custom Works designed these brackets, manufactures them, and distributes them worldwide. There is no other source. And they are built around one specific light — the Auxbeam 5-inch square cube pod — so the fit is exact rather than approximate.

The Pain: A Wing Delete That Looks Like a Wing Delete

Walk any FJ meet in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi and you will see three versions of the same front end.

The first still has the factory wings. They are usually chalked, faded from black to a dusty grey, and often cracked at the mounting tabs where years of thermal cycling have worked the plastic loose. On a silver or Cement Grey FJ they read as a stain across the bumper.

The second has had the wings removed and nothing put back. Two open rectangles, the raw bumper structure visible behind them, sand collecting in the cavity. It is honest, and it is free, but it looks like a part fell off on the E11 rather than a decision someone made.

The third has a light pod zip-tied, bracketed or bolted in with a universal mount from somewhere. This is the version that frustrates owners the most, because the intention was right and the execution fought back. The pod sits proud of the bumper line. There is a visible gap around it where sand and water get in. At 100 km/h on the Sheikh Zayed there is a low whistle that was not there before. And after a season of vibration on washboard tracks, the mount has usually worked itself loose enough to need re-torquing.

We covered the broader wing delete conversation in our earlier piece on the FJ Cruiser wing delete brackets and fog light kit, but the short version is this: the common thread is that nobody makes a part shaped for this exact job. Universal brackets are universal precisely because they were not designed for the FJ Cruiser's bumper geometry — they are designed for nothing in particular and adapted to everything badly.

That is the problem this bracket set exists to solve. Not "a way to mount a light." A finished front end.

The Diagnosis: Why the Factory Part Was Never Going to Last Here

The original fog light wing is a cost-engineered part. That is not an insult — it is how every mass-production vehicle is built. The wing had to be cheap to mould in high volume, light enough not to hurt the fuel economy figure, and durable enough to comfortably outlast the warranty period in a temperate market. It succeeded at all three. It was simply never specified for the environment it ended up living in.

The failure mechanism is straightforward and you can watch it happen over a few years.

UV embrittlement. The factory wing is a painted or pigmented ABS-family thermoplastic. ABS has poor inherent ultraviolet resistance. Its protection lives in the surface coating and in additives that deplete over time. Under sustained UV load — and the UAE delivers some of the highest annual solar irradiance on earth — the polymer chains at the surface break down. The finish chalks. Colour lifts. Micro-cracks form and then run.

Heat cycling. A black plastic panel on a front bumper parked in open sun in July does not sit at ambient temperature. It sits well above it. Then at 3 a.m. it drops thirty degrees. Then it does it again the next day, and the next, for years. Every cycle the part expands and contracts against its mounting points. The tabs — the thinnest, most stressed geometry in the whole moulding — are where the fatigue concentrates. This is why so many removed wings snap at the clips rather than anywhere else.

Abrasion. Sand at speed is a media blaster. The lower front of any vehicle driven regularly at Liwa, Sweihan or Fossil Rock is being physically eroded. Once a UV-degraded surface is also being abraded, the protective layer is gone and degradation accelerates from the inside of the panel outward.

Salt and humidity. Coastal air across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and RAK carries salt. Salt is not kind to steel fasteners. A plastic part is only as reliable as the hardware holding it, and standard zinc-plated bolts in a wet-salt cycle corrode, seize and eventually shear on removal.

None of this is a defect. It is a part built to a cost and a lifespan, doing exactly what it was specified to do, in a climate that shortens that lifespan by every mechanism available at once.

The Solution: What We Changed and Why It Matters

The FJ Cruiser wing delete brackets are not a copy of the factory part in a better plastic. They are a different part with a different job: close the wing delete opening cleanly and hold a 5-inch square light pod exactly where it belongs.

ASA, all the way through

These brackets are moulded in ASA — acrylonitrile styrene acrylate. ASA is the material used across the industry where a polymer has to live outdoors permanently: exterior mirror housings, roof rails, grille components. It replaces the butadiene phase in ABS with an acrylic ester rubber, and that single change is what gives it genuine UV stability rather than surface-applied protection.

The practical consequence: ASA does not chalk out the way ABS does under prolonged sun. It holds mechanical properties at continuous elevated temperatures where ABS begins to soften and creep. And it does not depend on a paint layer to survive, which matters enormously on a part that is going to be sandblasted.

Ours are black through the full section — not black paint over a lighter substrate, not a coating. Colour-through. A stone chip on the E611 does not reveal a pale wound underneath. A scuff from a recovery strap does not need touching up. There is no finish to fade because the colour is the material.

Aerodynamic profile, not a flat plate

Bolting a square box onto a bumper creates turbulence, and turbulence at 120 km/h is noise and drag. The bracket profile follows the FJ Cruiser's factory bumper line and shrouds the pod so air moves across the front end rather than slamming into a step and separating.

What you notice as a driver is quiet. The whistle you get from an exposed universal mount is not there, because there is no sharp discontinuity for the airflow to trip over. What you do not notice — but the engine does — is that the front end is not carrying an extra drag penalty for the sake of a light. On a long run down to Liwa, that difference is not nothing.

Built around the Auxbeam 5-inch cube pod

These are the only brackets designed to take the Auxbeam 5-inch square cube pod and integrate it into the FJ Cruiser front end as though it were always meant to be there. The aperture is dimensioned to that light. The pod seats flush. There is no packing, no shimming, no gap where sand builds up, no bracket visible around the edge of the housing.

That specificity is the entire point. A universal mount tolerates many lights badly. This tolerates one light perfectly.

Hardware that survives the coast

Every set ships with black stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts. Stainless because salt air and standard fasteners have a short, unhappy relationship. Black because a bright fastener head on a black bracket looks like an afterthought, and because the finish should be as considered as the part.

Fitting requires drilling the mounting holes and trimming the factory fog light opening so the bracket seats flush. Hand tools and a drill; well within reach of a competent installer, and quick work for a workshop.

Five-year warranty

We warrant these brackets for five years. That number is a statement about the material, not a marketing gesture. We are able to offer it because ASA in this application does not have a two-year cliff waiting for it, and because we control the design, the manufacturing and the distribution end to end — so when something needs to be made right, there is no supply chain to hide behind.

Made for How the FJ Actually Gets Used Here

The FJ Cruiser in the UAE is not a mall car. It is a dune vehicle, a camping platform, a Hatta and Jebel Jais weekend truck, and — for a large share of owners — a daily driver that does all of that and still has to sit in a car park in Deira at 2 p.m. in August.

For dune drivers. Deflated tyres, side slopes, sand ingress everywhere, and a front end that spends its life either buried or airborne. A flush bracket has nothing for sand to pack behind and nothing protruding to catch on a crest. When you are following a line at Big Red and the light is going, a properly mounted 5-inch pod pointed where you actually need it is a safety component, not a styling one.

For campers and overlanders. Liwa, Al Qudra, the Hatta pools, the long runs into the far east of the country. You want auxiliary light that is aimed consistently and does not need re-aiming after every corrugated track, because a mount that vibrates loose is a light that points at the sky. Rigid, correctly bolted, load-bearing geometry is what keeps beam alignment where you set it.

For daily drivers. The front end is what your FJ says about you at every traffic light on Al Khail. A wing delete done properly reads as deliberate — it tightens the whole face of the vehicle, removes the dated bulk of the factory wings, and replaces it with something square, purposeful and clean.

Every one of those use cases loads the same part in a different way, and every one of them is made harder by heat, UV and sand. That is why the material choice comes first and the styling follows. We wrote more about how Gulf conditions dictate material selection in our guide to surviving the GCC climate with advanced automotive manufacturing, and the same reasoning drives everything in our Toyota parts collection.

The Proof: RCW Brackets Against the Factory Wing

Specification Factory Fog Light Wing RCW Wing Delete Bracket
Material ABS-family thermoplastic, painted or pigmented ASA, colour-through black inside and out
UV resistance Coating-dependent; chalks and fades with sustained exposure Inherent UV stability; no finish layer to lose
Heat tolerance Softens and creeps under sustained high surface temperature Retains form and stiffness through repeated Gulf heat cycling
Dimensional stability Tab fatigue and warping after years of thermal cycling Rigid section, engineered mounting geometry, no sag under pod load
Auxiliary light support None — decorative wing only Accepts the Auxbeam 5-inch square cube pod flush
Aerodynamics Bulky scoop profile Shrouded profile that follows the bumper line; reduced turbulence and wind noise
Hardware Standard plated fasteners, corrode in coastal air Black stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts included
Warranty Vehicle warranty period, long expired 5 years from Rigid Custom Works
Availability Increasingly scarce and expensive Designed, manufactured and distributed exclusively by Rigid Custom Works

What the owner experiences after fitting: a front end with no gaps, no exposed bumper structure and no visible mounting hardware. A pod that stays aimed where it was set. Noticeably less wind noise than a universal mount at highway speed. Black that is still black three summers from now. And a set of fasteners that will actually come undone if you ever need them to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does fitting these involve?

Remove the factory wings, drill the mounting holes, and trim the factory fog light opening so the bracket seats flush. Then bolt it in with the supplied stainless hardware and fit the pod. Hand tools and a drill are all that is needed. Check the fitment details on the product page against your vehicle before ordering.

Do I have to use the Auxbeam 5-inch cube pod?

The aperture is dimensioned specifically for the Auxbeam 5-inch square cube pod, and that is the combination we designed, tested and recommend — it is what produces the flush, gap-free result. Other 5-inch square lights vary in housing dimensions and mounting arrangement, so fit is not guaranteed. If you want the finish shown in the photographs, use the pod the bracket was built around.

How does ASA actually hold up to a UAE summer?

ASA is specified across the automotive industry for permanently exposed exterior components precisely because it resists UV degradation without relying on a coating, and it holds its mechanical properties at continuous elevated temperature. Combined with colour-through black pigmentation, that means no chalking, no fading to grey, and no paint layer that can lift or flake after a season of sand.

Why are these the only brackets like this?

Because we designed them. Rigid Custom Works is the original designer, manufacturer and worldwide distributor of this bracket set — it is not a rebadged universal mount or a reproduction of an existing part. That also means the design, the material specification and the five-year warranty all sit with one company rather than being spread across a supply chain.

Is fitting them a workshop job?

It is well within reach of anyone comfortable with hand tools and a drill, and a workshop will have it done quickly. There is no wiring involved in the bracket itself — the pod is wired as you would wire any auxiliary light. If you would rather not cut and drill your own bumper, hand it to a fitter.

A Front End That Looks Engineered, Because It Is

The factory wings were built to a cost and a lifespan, and in this climate that lifespan ran out years ago. Removing them is the right call. Leaving a hole where they were is not — and neither is bolting a universal bracket into a car that deserves better.

These brackets close that gap the way it should have been closed from the beginning: a material chosen for the conditions rather than for the unit price, an aperture cut for one specific light instead of tolerating a dozen badly, an aerodynamic profile that keeps the airflow attached and the cabin quiet, black stainless hardware that will not seize, and a five-year warranty from the company that designed the part.

If your FJ is going to keep doing Liwa in April and Deira in August, give the front of it something built for both. The FJ Cruiser 5-inch square wing delete brackets are in stock and shipping worldwide from Rigid Custom Works.
